Richard
Armstrong Whiting Piano Dedication
On
November 12th, the 120th anniversary of
the birth of famed composer Richard Armstrong
Whiting, his family gathered at The
Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook
Initiative in Carmel, Indiana for the
dedication and unveiling of his piano in
its new home.
Richard composed many of his greatest
hits on his beloved Steinway, including
Hooray for Hollywood, On the Good Ship Lollipop,
and Too Marvelous for Words.
For forty-five years the piano served
as the centerpiece of Richard's daughter
Margaret Whiting's New York City home. After
Margaret's passing, her daughter Debbi carried
out her mother's wishes by donating the
piano to an institution that would appreciate
it's significance in American's musical history.
Not only
has the Great American Songbook Initiative
provided a wonderful new home for the piano,
but prior to the unveiling the piano was
painstakingly and meticulously restored.
Enjoy these
photos from Richard's 120th birthday celebration
and piano dedication.
